With the 65th pick in the third round, the Dallas Cowboys select …

Hayden Hurst, TE, South Carolina

Acquiring the pick from Buffalo comes in handy as Dallas is able to take another shot at replacing a legend.  Ironically, it was the 69th pick in the 2003 NFL draft that brought Jason Witten to the Cowboys.  Now, Hayden Hurst is brought in to fill his massive shoes just four picks sooner.

With Witten around to teach Hurst the finer points of the position, the sky could be the limit.  Hurst has elite feet and is able to separate from linebackers in coverage.  He has a good feel for zone coverages and reliable hands.  Hurst had just one drop his entire college career.

He also has the willingness to be a good blocker and will only get better learning techniques from a first ballot Hall of Famer.

With the 80th pick in the third round, the Dallas Cowboys select …

Josey Jewell, LB, Iowa

In Jewell, the Cowboys acquire a poor man’s version of Sean Lee.  Jewell’s instincts are off the charts as he plays with passion, physicality and cerebral awareness.   He’s a consistent tackler who finishes well.  His 4.68-forty yard dash at his pro day solidifies this draft spot.

Jewell will help alleviate the loss of former Hawkeye turned Cowboy Anthony Hitchens.
