Dallas Cowboys headlines: Combine stars, Receiver interest
The Dallas Cowboys appear to be on the market for a new wide receiver or two. Those hot topics and more we’ll cover in today’s edition of headlines.
Last year, the Dallas Cowboys wide receiver corps figured to be one of their top positional groups going into the new season. With a solid top three in Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams and Cole Beasley combined with Bruce Butler and rookies Ryan Switzer and Noah Brown; this unit seemed like a hard one to crack.
A year later, and an underwhelming 2017 campaign has left them all vulnerable. With Bryant’s status with the team still in question, the Cowboys figure to be in the market for a wide receiver or two in either free agency, or more likely, the draft. With the NFL Scouting Combine taking place this weekend, it’s the perfect time to discuss some rookie wide outs in today’s headlines.
Scout’s Notebook: Standouts & Surprises From The Early NFL Combine Workouts – DallasCowboys.com
First, if you are a Cowboys fan and not following the great work Bryan Broaddus, Dan Brugler and David Helman are doing at the NFL Scouting Combine this weekend, you are doing yourself a real disservice. They are the best in the league at what they do and give fans more insider access than you’ll find anywhere else.
What struck me most of all the great notes in the above article by Broaddus is the fact the Cowboys are interviewing (formally or informally) a slew of the draft’s top receivers. It’s confirmation that Dallas is looking into the idea of shaking up their wide receiver corps. And that’s exciting.
Cowboys, Colts among best fits for stock-surging WR D.J. Chark – NFL.com
One of the wide receiver prospects that should be on every fan’s radar is LSU’s D.J. Chark. The 6-foot-3 wide out ran a 4.34 forty at the Combine. It’s that same intriguing combination of height and speed that kept Brice Butler in Dallas for years despite his inconsistent play and drops.
SMU’s Sutton: Playing for Cowboys would be dream come true – NFL.com
I’ve often wondered how much a player “loving the Cowboys” helps their draft stock. I think, from purely a scouting aspect, none at all. But proclaiming your love for a team surely endears them to the franchise in some small way. And being on a team you’ve dreamed about playing for your entire life surely has some benefit.
Offseason questions for every team – Pro Football Focus
Surprise. The Cowboys’ biggest offseason question in the above story is about the future of Dez Bryant in Dallas. Based on the interest Dallas appears to have in this wide receiver class, Bryant’s future seems even more limited in Big D.

Jerry Jones says he’s looking forward to reimbursement hearing with Roger Goodell – ESPN.com
And why not? Jerry Jones has $2 million reasons to try and minimize the expense the NFL is attempting to levy on him. Although many see this action as some sort of punishment, the league has already won ten times over. This appears to be simply part of the process based on a rule established back in 1997 and nothing more. Time to move on.
