Would the Dallas Cowboys sign this free agent tight end?

With a roster already stock full of tight ends, could this potential free agent addition be too tempting for the Dallas Cowboys to pass up?

The tight end position continues to be a favorite for media members when it comes team needs for the Dallas Cowboys. With future Hall of Famer Jason Witten turning 36-years old prior to the start of his 16th season in the NFL, many figure the Cowboys are on the lookout for his future replacement.

Yet, many seem to ignore the fact that Dallas is currently bloated at the tight end position. Behind the stalwart starter in Witten are James Hanna, Geoff Swaim, Blake Jarwin and Rico Gathers. The Cowboys are already in a bit of a pickle as it is. Throwing another tight end into the mix seems foolhardy.

But that’s exactly what one NFL insider believes the Cowboys should do. And not for some rookie to develop under Witten, but for a free agent veteran who just won a Super Bowl ring.

"“Dallas’ passing attack was predictable by the end of last season, in desperate need of some versatile, youthful pass catchers,” wrote Gregg Rosenthal  for NFL.com. “Enter [Trey] Burton, the type of ‘move’ tight end that the Cowboys have generally stayed away from during the Jason Witten era. With Witten’s career winding down, it would be a coup to steal Burton from their division rivals to help heat up a stale offense.”"

Trey Burton figures to get starter-level money this offseason on an open market that has a shortage of quality tight ends. Burton played well for the Philadelphia Eagles when called upon, which wasn’t very often. The 26-year old recorded 23 receptions for 248 yards and five touchdowns in his fourth NFL season. The 6-foot-3, 235 pound Burton went undrafted out of Florida back in 2014.

The Dallas Cowboys appear to be an unlikely landing spot for Burton, especially considering his price tag and Dallas’ current roster. Both Hanna and Swaim are in the final year of their respective deals. So, if the Cowboys were going to make a splash at the tight end position, I’d expect it to come next year.
