Will Rico Gathers be the one to dethrone tight end Jason Witten? We’ll discuss that and more as we review today’s Dallas Cowboys’ headlines.

The Dallas Cowboys offseason is expected to heat up soon with the anticipated use of the franchise tag on Pro Bowl pass rusher DeMarcus Lawrence in the coming days. But the news right now is all about fifth-string tight end Rico Gathers.

Welcome to America’s Team! Where even a Cowboys player who has yet to see any regular season action can be vaulted to the top of the headlines. Speaking of headlines, let’s get into them.

Rico Gathers: I’m going to be the league’s next great tight end – Pro Football Talk

A former basketball star at Baylor, the Cowboys took a flier on Rico Gathers in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Since then, Gathers has been trying to use his unique combination size and athleticism to make the transition to the NFL. He flashed promise in the preseason, posting two receiving touchdowns. But a violent head injury sidelined him for his entire second season.

Heading into Year Three, Gathers is going to have to prove he can be a reliable blocker and possesses the playbook knowledge in order for the Cowboys coaching staff to trust him on the field. The kid is already a great receiving tight end and dynamic after the catch.

But the best tight end in the NFL? Gathers will have to leapfrog the four other tight ends ahead of him on the depth chart in Dallas first. Look, that’s a pretty bold proclamation by a player who hasn’t played in a regular season snap yet. But it’s good to have confidence though.

If Jerry Jones makes coaching move, what could 2019 search look like? – ESPN.com

Four names come to mind when it comes to possible replacements for Jason Garrett as head coach for the Dallas Cowboys in 2019. Sean Payton, Bill Cowher, Dan Campbell and … Tony Romo. My biggest concern would be which of the four would work well with Jerry Jones? I’m thinking Romo.

Dak Prescott ranked as best NFL QB in stat you might not expect – Dallas Morning News

Football analytics can be used to prove all different kinds of points. Here, the stat is tight window throws. At times, Prescott played well last season. But he also admitted to playing some of the worst football of his life. Not matter how you look at it, 2017 was not a good season for Dak.
