Outspoken former Dallas Cowboys great Charles Haley didn’t hold back when giving his opinion about the declining success of America’s Team.

Pro football Hall of Famer Charles Haley recently sat down with the Dennis and Cowlishaw show on 103.3 ESPN Dallas and gave his insights and opinions on the Cowboys. The answers he provided were exactly what you would expect from someone who played a prominent role during the Cowboys dominant run during the 1990’s which yielded three Super Bowls.

When asked about why the 2017 Cowboys fell to 9-7 after going 13-3 in 2016:

"“I don’t think they understand what it takes to win a game,” said Haley during the radio interview according to CBS Sports. ” … I blame everybody. It’s one team and everybody’s together. And that’s the key. I go over there and I tell guys, ‘Man, Jerry [Jones] built this house for a bunch of damn losers.’ And they get mad. They have to do something about it. I can’t do anything about it, I can’t play. All I can do is give you some knowledge.”"

Reading quotes like this, especially from someone who knows what it’s like to win consistently at a very high level, is so refreshing when thinking about this current Dallas Cowboys team. Is he wrong? Absolutely not.

Do the Cowboys know what it takes to win in the NFL? I would lean towards no. Even in 2016 after going 13-3 and locking up the number one seed in the playoffs, they got knocked out on their home field in the divisional round much like in 2007. In the last five years there has only been one NFC number one seed to not make the Super Bowl; the 2016 Dallas Cowboys.

The inconsistency speaks volumes about the team as well; going from 12-4 in 2014, 4-12 in 2015, 13-3 in 2016, and back to 9-7 in 2017. That trend could suggest some validity to Haley’s opinion of this team taking their previous record for granted and just assuming sustained success.

There is a certain mindset and a culture that goes with building and sustaining a championship organization.

For an organization that has only two playoff wins in the past 20+ seasons, that mindset and culture has been lacking in Dallas for quite some time and currently shows no signs of being brought back and re-instilled by this current regime. Is Charles Haley right when pointing in the direction of lacking drive and winning mentality when citing the lack of success in Big D? Recent history could say yes.
