The Dallas Cowboys want to make their offense more friendly for quarterback Dak Prescott and Texas A&M wide receiver Christian Kirk would do that.

With more than two months still remaining before the 2018 NFL Draft at the venue formerly known as Cowboys Stadium, it’s still impossible to project who the Dallas Cowboys will end up with in the first round. Mock drafts throughout the digital universe are all over the place concerning that first selection.

At this point, nobody really knows exactly where the Cowboys will end up choosing – remember that in 2013 America’s Team traded out of the 18th selection before finally settling on center Travis Frederick with the 31st overall selection.

This year the Dallas Cowboys are scheduled to go on the clock with the 19th selection, but in a quarterback heavy draft there would seem to be a fair chance that we could see another trade down maneuver from owner and general manger Jerry Jones. Then again, the Cowboys could trade up as well.

If we’re talking about an offensive selection in the first round, then wide receiver is a pretty popular position projection for the Dallas Cowboys in 2018. I’ve personally endorsed Courtland Sutton for the honor of becoming the future primary target for quarterback Dak Prescott. Sutton has fantastic size and strength and could very well for the bill.

Having said that, I find myself leaning more towards another option at wide receiver should the Cowboys end up going that direction in the first round. To start with, Sutton probably doesn’t slip into the latter part of Round 1 come April, but even if he does I’m not sure he’s the kind of immediate solution that Prescott might need.

Absent a huge steal in the form of Calvin Ridley, I’m liking the idea of Christian Kirk lining up along with Dez Bryant and occasionally Terrance Williams in 2018.

Kirk is a versatile route runner who gains the kind of separation that many feel is lacking in the Dallas Cowboys offense. Right now we can find strong, tall and quick – but not fast.

Kirk may not be the fastest wide receiver coming out of college, but he’s going to be near the top. While his height isn’t necessarily outstanding, it doesn’t need to be. Kirk is a guy who can get lost in coverage and he’s certainly a weapon that can get deep downfield quickly. He’s so talented that just his presence on the field forces defensive coordinators to address him with top notch personnel.

The Bryant era is probably nearing its end and I think the Dallas Cowboys should be preparing for that day. Then again, Bryant is likely in Dallas for the 2018 regular season and if there’s any way to get him better matchups that favor his skillset then head coach Jason Garrett should be highly interested heading into a ‘hot seat’ season that he’s somehow been aboe to avoid for close to a decade.

Now, I’m all about defense, defense, defense in the first round, especially in the trenches. But I’m betting good money that the Dallas Cowboys aren’t going to ask me what I think about this year’s draft class. In this case, it’s worth pondering what offensive players might be within Dallas’ reach with the 19th pick or later – I don’t believe the Cowboys trade up, but if they do it won’t be for a wide receiver.

Give me Christian Kirk in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft and I’ll give that selection an A.
