Dallas Cowboys 2018 NFL Draft: Positions off limits in 1st round
Quarterback: Dak Prescott is the future for now
Quarterbacks are expected to fly off the board early and often in this year’s draft. While this is generally the case, this year should be more like what we saw in 1983 or 1999, both years in which five or more quarterbacks were chosen in the opening round of the draft.
We know that four quarterbacks are going in the first round, but that number could swell all the way to six before all is said and done. This doesn’t mean that all first-round passers will go off the board before the Dallas Cowboys go on the clock, but every one that goes prior to the 19th pick is a bonus for America’s Team.

The reality is that the Cowboys are set at quarterback with 2016 fourth-round pick Dak Prescott. Despite this year’s regression from 13-3 to 9-7, the franchise has no reason to be thinking of another quarterback at this time. Prescott is highly respected by the coaching staff and players and his arrow is still pointing upwards and it will probably remain in that position over the next season or two.
If the Cowboys were bringing in a new coaching staff, which obviously isn’t the case, this might be a different discussion.
But with the organization bringing top coaches back for what feels like a ‘do-or-die’ 2018 campaign, there’s no reason to be taking another highly rated quarterback in the first round, period.
Even if no quarterbacks were selected prior to that 19th pick, the Cowboys would still be in position to grab the best player available at a given position, which is probably the direction they’ll be taking anyway. But the more quarterbacks that go off the board the more premium players at positions of need fall to Dallas and this is where Cowboys Nation could be surprised by who might fall into the lap of the Cowboys.
