Anthony Brown, Cornerback

The bloom is off the rose when it comes to second-year cornerback Anthony Brown. And he’s starting to approach Brandon Carr-territory in Dallas.

Brown had an amazing rookie season considering he was a sixth round selection. But he’s certainly having a sophomore slump in Dallas. At times, this kid seems absolutely lost and plays overly aggressive. The latter can be a good quality, but not in this case.

The young defender’s play is even more disturbing when compared to rookie Jourdan Lewis, who appears to be the better corner at this point. And that’s despite Lewis missing most of training camp and the entire preseason due to injury!

Now it’s true, Brown’s tipped pass in the Falcons’ first offensive series led to the Xavier Woods interception. And that led to the Cowboys taking a 7-0 lead in the contest. But it was all downhill from there for Brown.

The 23-year old’s sloppy technique and inconsistent play has led to a team-high seven penalties so far this season (tied with left tackle Tyron Smith). Brown undoubtedly has potential. But with second round pick Chidobe Awuzie apparently set to return soon, Dallas may opt to bench Brown until he proves he can handle the starting role once again.
