123. . Guard. Dallas Cowboys. Jonathan Cooper. 5. player

The one name you didn’t hear much about Saturday night was left guard Jonathan Cooper. And that’s a good thing! Unlike left tackle Chaz Green, who did hear his name announced a couple times.

In fact, playing beside Green most of the night, who had a rough outing, I believe Cooper came away as the clear cut leader for landing the starting left guard job in Dallas.

If you are a Cowboys fan, this is great news. The competition at left guard as been a topic of unrest throughout the offseason and through half of training camp. And the fact Dallas seemed unsettled at position through their third preseason game was worrisome.

But Cooper, a former first round bust for the Arizona Cardinals, appears to have done a fine job on Saturday night. If the Cowboys’ coaches agree, the 27-old lineman may get his chance to cement himself between left tackle Tyron Smith and center Travis Frederick as a starter. And I’m not sure there is a better place to resurrect a NFL career than between those two All-Pros.

Regardless, Jonathan Cooper’s play against the Colts, and maybe more directly, Chaz Green’s poor play and injury history, appears to have given us a front-runner in the race for the Cowboys starting left tackle role. Now it appears to be Cooper’s job to win…or lose.
