Position Battle #4 – Right Offensive Tackle

The retirement of long time starting tackle Doug Free has left a vacancy on the right side of arguably the most dominant offensive line in the NFL.

More from The Landry Hat

Most fans know that the left tackle is normally the most gifted and coveted positions along the offensive line, and the Cowboys have a great one in Tyron Smith.

Right tackles on the other hand, normally play there because they are either lacking the ideal traits to play the left side or they aren’t as talented as the team’s starter at that spot.

Right tackles still need to have good length, quick feet, and a solid frame.

While pass blocking is still important, right tackles are usually strong and have to be able to clear the way for running backs on the strong side of the offensive formation – where the majority of run plays are designed to go.

This is a competition that should get a lot of attention throughout the preseason and training camp while the team figures out what the best route to take will be.
