Dallas Cowboys 2017 NFL Draft: Grading Each Pick
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 300 lbs.
Combine 40 Speed/Bench: 5.10/26
2016 Numbers: 26 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks
Analysis: The Dallas Cowboys have plenty of defensive lineman versatile enough to play inside at tackle. So, with the addition of Florida’s Joey Ivie, you help to create competition at the position.
Ivie is a Rod Marinelli guy. A tough, smart player with a high motor that’s also a competitor. He’ll use quickness over strength to get past offensive lineman. He’s a solid seventh round flier, but certainly not a lock to make it on to the 53-man roster.
The Cowboys have players like Maliek Collins, Cedric Thornton, David Irving, Stephen Paea and Tyrone Crawford who are better defensive tackles. Ivie’s addition is likely more of a camp body than someone who is competing for a back role along this suddenly crowded defensive line.
But I have to admit, seeing Marinelli so pumped about the Ivie pick makes me a little giddy.
