Dallas Cowboys: A simple solution to fix the defense
By Tyler Harris
I present what I believe to be a simple solution to fix the Dallas Cowboys defense through fortifying their defensive line.
There has been much debate about which route the Dallas Cowboys should take in the first round of the NFL draft. There is a simple solution, in my opinion. Fortify the defensive line.
It all goes back to the old adage that games are won in the trenches in the NFL. Look no further than the Cowboys own offensive line for a great example of this.
As most fans know, Dallas doesn’t have a perennial double digit sack master. That’s okay. Many teams win championships without having one. The key is having multiple guys that can win their match ups and create pressure.
The foundation is in place for a very good defensive line rotation. David Irving, Maliek Collins, DeMarcus Lawrence, Charles Tapper, and Tyrone Crawford. Then they have great rotational role players.
If America’s Team can find another two pressure players in the draft that’s perfect. If a defense can get 6-7 guys that have the ability to bring constant pressure the rest of the defense gets better.
A good pass rush makes an average secondary look great. Linebackers don’t have to work as hard. Oh, and turnovers seem to just happen a lot more frequently.
The good news for the Cowboys is that this draft is deep at defensive line and secondary players. Theoretically they should be able to fortify both units if that’s where they are committed to improving.
I would bet the front office knows how crucial it is to win up front. I expect them to use premium resources to improve in that area.
