The Dallas Cowboys are narrowing their options for players to select in the NFL Draft. There are some interesting scenarios they can find themselves in.

The Dallas Cowboys are heading into the busiest part of the offseason, draft preparation. With only a few short weeks prior to the NFL’s biggest offseason event the team must position itself to have some flexibility during the draft.

The recent signing of talented offensive lineman Byron Bell should allow Dallas to hold off on drafting an offensive lineman until the later rounds. The Cowboys are likely not done with their offseason moves quite yet as several big questions remain.

Should the Cowboys trade for Richard Sherman?

The Seattle Seahawks have expressed that they will trade their star cornerback, Richard Sherman for the right price. What he is worth remains to be seen but should the Cowboys attempt to acquire the competitive corner?

Probably a lot is the answer unless the Seahawks know something the rest of us are not privy too. It does not make much sense on their part but realistically they would at the very least ask for a first round pick.

Even with the losses in the secondary the Cowboys could easily find some quality corners in the draft that wont put a cramp on their cap. Drafting young cornerbacks will be very important for the Cowboys this offseason as they need some fresh blood in the defensive backfield.

Trading for Sherman also directly contradicts the typical Dallas offseason plan which is to build the roster through the NFL Draft. Speaking of the draft, the Cowboys could be faced with some pretty interesting decisions regarding their backup quarterback position.

Theoretically what happens if Deshaun Watson falls to the Cowboys?

More from The Landry Hat

The quarterback prospects in the 2017 NFL Draft have been falling rapidly down draft boards as teams are realizing grabbing the best prospect available may not mean selecting a quarterback.

Former North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubisky is now seen as the best prospect available at the position and will likely be the first quarterback off the board. Clemson’s former starting quarterback, Deshaun Watson has been slated to be taken later in the draft and could be on the board while the Cowboys are on the clock.

It would be weird to invest your first round pick in a quarterback especially if you have a starter like Dak Prescott. But the Cowboys at the moment are in need of a quality backup quarterback.

Regardless if veteran quarterback, Tony Romo is on the roster or not the team will need a player waiting in the wings just in case anything were to happen to Prescott. It would be surprising to see the team take Watson however he could at the very least be a great trade asset.

The team could select the talented quarterback or they could trade back with a team who wants the opportunity to select Watson. Dallas would welcome an extra second (and/or) third round pick. There are so many quality players available late in this draft that the team could find some capable starters well after the first round.

This is obviously all dependent if all of the top pass rushers/cornerbacks are off of the board. If the best player on the board happens to be Watson or a running back, the Cowboys could look to trade back and land some quality players early in the second round.

Is the last chance for a Romo trade at the owners meetings?

We have come to the breaking point in the Tony Romo saga as it seems that he will retire unless he goes to the Houston Texans. The Denver Broncos would have to give one heck of a proposal to get Romo to move his family out of Texas so the only realistic option are the Texans.

This could make things complicated as Houston is determined to play hardball with the Cowboys about Romo. They do not want to trade for the talented quarterback and instead want to sign him to a contract on their own terms.

The Cowboys and Romo have already stated they would restructure the veteran quarterback’s contract to help facilitate a trade. Houston has to be smart here as they cannot make a deep playoff run without a productive quarterback.

Wasting the most productive years of their star players is not exactly the way I would approach this season if I were the Texans. Houston quarterbacks, Tom Savage and Brandon Weeden will not get them to the Super Bowl.

Anyway you look at it, the Texans would be in a better place with Romo so why not give up a mid/late pick for the opportunity to have a franchise quarterback. So what you will about Romo’s injuries, he is still a better option than half of the players getting long term deals and unless the Texans are going to sign Colin Kaepernick they will be out of options.

If their plan is to select a quarterback to back up Savage in the draft, the would still be basically wasting a pick on the position anyway so why not give it up for the opportunity at acquiring Romo.
