Dallas Cowboys clear cap space: Targeting free agents?
By Carl Daley
Recently creating over $17 million in salary cap space, are the Dallas Cowboys preparing to make a big splash signing in free agency?
The Dallas Cowboys are once again in the news. But this time it appears that there is actual movement on the contract front.
As NFL teams begin to position themselves for free agent runs and new contracts for returning players, the Cowboys appear to be primed to have ample cap space.
The Cowboys in the last few days have managed to clear $17.3 million in salary cap space as they have restructured the contracts of offensive linemen, Tyron Smith and Travis Frederick. This is only the beginning as the team should be able to find more space in restructuring tight end Jason Witten and defensive lineman Tyrone Crawford contract’s as well.
The Cowboys are currently six million dollars over the cap and will likely more space after a trade or release of former starting quarterback Tony Romo. The veteran signal caller makes up 14.40% of the Cowboys 2017 salary cap. So figuring out what to do with Romo could be a huge factor financially heading into free agency.
While there may not be any players that Dallas should throw the majority of their money towards (unless Kansas City Chiefs’ safety Eric Berry is available) they can patch up the holes on their roster as the team prepares for the NFL Draft. The less needs the team has going into the draft the more flexible they could be when selecting prospects.

This is important when it comes to selecting the best player available, which the Cowboys like to do. The team could also save a big portion of this cap to re-sign players in the future. However, that currently seems unlikely. Depending on how Romo leaves the organization the team could be the most financial stable Cowboys’ roster we’ve seen in years.
