Jason Witten: Dallas Cowboys, Dak Prescott plan is pretty clear

Dallas Cowboys future hall of fame tight end Jason Witten talks about rookie quarterback Dak Prescott and his future with the team.

The Dallas Cowboys are likely the most talked about team in all of sports. And this season, that talk was at an all-time high mainly due to the fact America’s Team was winning again. And their 13-3 record thrust them back into Super Bowl relevance.

But the top subject being tossed around sports talk radio shows, website headlines and bar banter did not likely concern the Cowboys winning record. But more likely it was about the men playing under center. Those players being rookie quarterback Dak Prescott and veteran gunslinger Tony Romo.

The 36-year old Romo found himself sidelined nearly the entire season, in part due to suffering a compression fracture in his back during the Cowboys third preseason game of the season against the Seattle Seahawks.

The other reason the 14-year veteran didn’t see regular season action until a meaningless Week 17 matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles, was due to the excellent play of Prescott. Following the team’s disappointing loss to the Green Bay Packers in the divisional round of the playoffs, there have been some quiet rumblings about the possibility of Romo taking back the reins of America’s Team in 2017 as the starter.

But according to longtime Cowboys tight end Jason Witten, it’s pretty clear that the team’s future under center is Prescott.

"“Yeah, Dak [Prescott] was 13-3 and the way he played, at a high level, he’s got a bright future ahead of him,” said Witten during an interview on FS1’s Undisputed. “How everything plays out moving forward, Dak’s certainly got a bright future at that. What’s Tony [Romo’s] role within that? They’ll get together and work that out. I think what Dak’s shown through his first year, ultimately, what our team’s trying to do moving forward, I think that’s clear.”"

Without flat out stating it, Witten appears to be indicating the Cowboys are now Prescott’s team. Although the 34-year old tight end did admit that it is ultimately owner and general manager Jerry Jones’ decision. But Witten does believe Jones, Romo and Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett will get together and figure out how to move forward.

But the stalwart tight end also glowed when talking about the relationship between Prescott and Romo. And particularly Tony’s handling of the quarterback controversy in Dallas, and how well both players addressed that difficult situation. Their past actions obviously give Witten hope the major offseason decision about Romo’s future in Dallas will be handled in a similar fashion.

What is clear is how this Cowboys team approached their quarterback situation through the season. Although Romo was the more experienced quarterback, by far, Dallas elected to move forward with Prescott amidst an 11-game winning streak. Even after Tony was declared healthy from his back injury and playing regularly in practice.

For the Dallas Cowboys, the future is Dak Prescott. What role Tony Romo will play, if any in Dallas, has yet to be determine. But it’s seems clear Day One starter for America’s Team is not one of them.
