With the 2016 regular season winding to a close, I take a look at the 2017 draft and make a way too early seven round mock for the Dallas Cowboys.

The Dallas Cowboys are currently 13-2 and sitting atop the NFL and tied for the best record in football.  They have one game left to play against the arch rival Philadelphia Eagles.  Sounds like a perfect time for a mock draft to me.  Let’s get started.

Team Needs

I recently tweeted out my top 5 team needs for this team in 2017.  For those who haven’t seen, I’ll include the tweet here.

Probably the first thing you noticed is the low placement of defensive end on my list.  Simply put, I don’t believe that is a major area of need for the Dallas Cowboys.  This may change as we get more information about the 2017 roster, but so long as the Cowboys retain David Irving and Terrell McClain, I believe they’ll be just fine at defensive end with Irving, Benson Mayowa, DeMarcus Lawrence and possibly Randy Gregory.

I see cornerback Morris Claiborne departing in free agency, so a cornerback will definitely be needed, and early.  Not to mention Brandon Carr likely only has one more year in Big D.

I also think it’s likely that wide receiver Terrance Williams signs with another ball club as well, making another receiving threat on the outside a priority.  If the Cowboys can’t retain defensive tackle Terrell McClain, then DT will become a big need as well.  Former Eagle Cedric Thornton may be able to play one-tech for Dallas, but I’d rather get a young guy in the rotation.

Finally, Dallas needs another quality offensive tackle.  I like second year pro Chaz Green, but he has some injury issues.  A young player at OT gives the Cowboys either their right tackle of the future or a nice insurance policy behind pro bowler Tyron Smith is Green becomes a staple on the line.

That’s enough about team needs.  Without further ado, let’s get on to the draft.
