The Dallas Cowboys will not suck this year, I guarantee it

The Dallas Cowboys have drafted well and it will pay dividends for years to come thanks to assistant director of player personnel Will McClay.

My cousin sent me a text message last month that read something like this…”Bro, just watch. Romo’s back, we got Zeke, Dez, and Witten. The offensive line is deep. Our defense has more chemistry. We’re gonna go all the way bro. Its a guarantee bro.”

Being the professional football analyst that I am, I agreed with is insight. But I also raised caution and texted back…”Yeah man. IF Romo stays healthy, and the offensive line keeps being dominant the sky is the limit. You going to come up for the wedding?”

Then we changed the subject and whatnot. It wasn’t until later that I realized that he was actually right. The Dallas Cowboys are poised to be really good this year.

The main reason Dallas is set to be so good for years to come is their scouting as of late. Assistant director of player personnel Will McClay has really turned this mediocre Cowboys team of the past into one full of promise. He started this by drafting a solid foundation of an offensive line which produced three bowlers last year: Tyron Smith, Travis Frederick, and Zack Martin.

McClay also added even more depth to the offensive line last year by signing tackle/guard La’el Collins when he went undrafted because of suspected legal troubles. This Cowboys offensive line will give anyone behind them a chance to win.

This same excellent evaluation can be said for quarterback Dak Prescott, running back Ezekiel Elliott, and last years acquisition of wide receiver Brice Butler. We have already seen Prescott’s impressive play in this years first three preseason games.

More from The Landry Hat

Social media cannot stop gushing over how poised the first year quarterback looks, how comfortable he is in the pocket, and how his leadership skills have already impressed teammates. At this point, Prescott is almost old news. So yeah, great job Will. Kudos to your department.

Even though Elliott has only played one game extensively, he has made enough of an impression to treat him with kid gloves during this preseason. The burst he has shown to get around the corner of NFL defenses (the mighty Seahawks for that matter) has really opened some eyes.

But the fact that Elliott went head to head with Seahawks safety “The Enforcer” Kam Chancellor is what coaches love. You can’t teach passion and Zeke has plenty. The Cowboys scouting department are patting themselves on the back for this pick.

In my expert opinion, the low key move that I hope people give McClay and his staff praise for is the acquisition of Butler. The speedy 6’3 receiver is lanky but can really go up and get the football. He is not afraid of contact and I like him better than teammate Terrance Williams as a deep threat. Yes, I said it.

I think Butler is far better than Williams when covered and thrown the deep ball. The former Oakland Raider was a real find last season and should begin paying dividends in 2016. Again, McClay and his staff deserve a raise…I mean, praise.

A Rice University Alum, McClay should be proud of what he has helped built so far in Dallas. Due in part to some of his savvy decisions, the Cowboys offense looks poised to be one of the NFL’s elite this year.

The regular season starts in seven days and there is still much football to be played for this to be proven true. If recent history tells us anything, it’s that if America’s Team can stay healthy, they’ll be playing meaningful football in January.

At least according to my cousin, Roger, they will. He guarantees it.
