Dallas Cowboys have a good problem at quarterback
By Tyler Harris
For the first time in quarterback Tony Romo‘s career with the Dallas Cowboys, it appears he has a real player behind him that can push him in Dak Prescott.
I have been fortunate enough to watch every game quarterback Tony Romo has ever played in Dallas since he joined the team back in 2003. I remember being very excited about the young undrafted quarterback from Eastern Illinois University during preseason games and thinking he was going to be the future starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. Since Romo took over the starting job during the 2006 season, there has not been a quarterback that brought that level of excitement behind Romo… until now.
Rookie quarterback Dak Prescott has blown the internet up after delivering on his playing-time opportunities, and looks to be a very solid backup to Romo. To many fans he looks like the future of America’s team. If the Cowboys front office was lucky enough to find the heir-apparent to Romo late in the 4th round of the NFL draft, they deserve a lot of credit.
The Cowboys have known what they have in Romo for well over a decade – an all-pro level talent that is more than capable of leading his team to a championship – so they haven’t spent many resources on the quarterback position. In fact, prior to this spring the Cowboys had only drafted one quarterback during Romo’s era and that was Stephen McGee back in 2009.
With Romo’s recent injury woes – he hasn’t played a full 16 game season since 2012 – and the lack of a solid veteran backup behind him, the Cowboys knew they had to invest in a quarterback this off-season. I don’t think they could have ever dreamed on Prescott being this good of a quarterback this soon in his NFL career, or they most likely would have spent a much higher pick than a late 4th round on the former SEC star.
With the instant success Prescott has had in his two starts this preseason, it has created a bit of controversy in Dallas. Does this put pressure on Romo to win a Super Bowl in Dallas this upcoming season? Will the Cowboys still want to carry Romo’s elite quarterback contract for the remainder of the deal? All of these topics still remain to be seen, but these questions are going to come up a lot more frequently if Prescott continues to grow and emerge behind Romo.
Romo himself realizes that he has a lot more road behind him than in front of him in his NFL career. With Dallas finding a talented young player to groom behind him, I have no doubt he will be a true professional and help Prescott any possible way he can.
The sad truth for Romo though, is that many fans don’t appreciate his talents and will be calling for Prescott as soon as Romo throws one interception. Romo isn’t the type of player to look over his shoulder, and it’s safe to say his goal is to help the Dallas Cowboys win a Super Bowl under his tutelage.
It’s a bit comical to be having this conversation at this point, considering that just a month ago the entire nation thought the Cowboys were screwed after fellow quarterback Kellen Moore broke his leg. Oh how quickly things change in life, and perhaps for once it will work out in the Cowboys favor.
Next: What Dak Prescott means for the future of the Cowboys
After all, they haven’t had a quarterback good enough to stick around as the backup in quite some time, let alone possibly be the future starter. Sometimes talent pushing talent is a good problem to have on a team, and time will tell us the rest of this story.
