Which Cowboys could break franchise records in 2016?
PASSING
With five Super Bowl rings between them, naturally the history books are filled with the names of Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman. So it somewhat surprises many that it’s in fact Tony Romo whose name adorns the record books.
In 2012 Romo had a barnstorming season despite the team finishing 8-8. With the quarterback setting seasonal franchise records for passing yards, passing yards per game and 4th quarter comebacks.
Tony Romo 2012 Records
- Passing Yards in a season: 4,903
- Passing yards per game: 306.4
- 4th Quarter Comebacks in a season: 5
After such an injury plagued year in 2015 and on top of the Cowboys decision to draft running back Ezekiel Elliott it’s hard to see Romo breaking his passing records from 2012.
Huge question marks remain over the Cowboys defense however. DeMarcus Lawrence and Randy Gregory are both suspended for the opening 4 games; rookie third round defensive tackle Maliek Collins suffered a broken foot recently and earlier this week Benson Mayowa was scheduled for surgery, leaving an already needy defensive line somewhat light weight.
"“I think we’ve created competitive situations on our defensive line. Now a couple of these guys have been injured over the course of OTAs and have not been available to us, but we’re confident these guys will be back. We have a couple of situations where we’re dealing with suspensions at the outset of the season. But we like the guys we put together and we like the competition that’s going on out there, guys competing for playing time.” – Jason Garrett"
Romo may well be required to march the team up field on more than one occasion for another desperate 4th quarter comeback.
While the defensive line may do Romo no favours, one record that’s likely to remain in place is the number of times a Cowboys quarterback was sacked in one season. Drew Bledsoe ate dirt 49 times in 2005. This Dallas Cowboys o-line will not allow Romo to suffer similar fate.
