Could you ever stop being a Dallas Cowboys fan?
Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones fears years of losing will eventually cause fans to stop loving America’s Team.
What is the definition of a fan? According to Merriam-Webster, a fan is an enthusiastic devotee (as of a sport or a performing art) usually as a spectator; an ardent admirer or enthusiast. One thing the definition lacks is any sort of timetable.
When it comes to being a Dallas Cowboys fan, many seem to believe that is a lifelong commitment. Through all the ups and the downs, you live and die with your team. Hence the term die-hard fan.
But by definition, being a fan is about enthusiasm. It’s been over twenty years since the Cowboys last won a Super Bowl title. In fact, in the last twenty years, they’ve went to the postseason just eight times, winning a total of three playoffs games. That kind of losing can suffocate enthusiasm and wear the patience of even the most devoted of fans wafer-thin.
For those fans who weren’t lucky enough to be around during the Cowboys Super Bowl run in the early nineties, that kind of losing is all they know of Dallas’ legacy firsthand. And that losing legacy is exactly what keeps Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones up at night.
"“I worry about that with older fans, that they finally say, ‘We’re done,’” Jones told the Dallas Morning News. “That’s why we try to do everything we can to show respect to our fans, to do things that I think are good things that our fans think are good things for our team. But at the end of the day, as I said, it’s all about the game and it’s all about winning a championship, and we got to get that done.”"
Heartbreak always accompanies fandom. It’s part of the job description. As a Cowboys fan, we’ve experienced the highest of highs, and the lowest of lows. Still, the moniker America’s Team seems untarnished.
The Cowboys last two years are a perfect example of the rollercoaster of emotion fans experience. From the high of a 12-4 season where the team got it’s first playoff victory in five years. To the low of a 4-12 season that was mainly due to two separate collarbone injuries suffered by starting quarterback Tony Romo.
But through all of it, Cowboys Nation seems resolute. If your fandom can survive the past two seasons, why not a lifetime more right? Well, maybe not. Again, the pure definition of a fan comes with no set timetable. And everyone apparently has a breaking point. The question is…what’s yours?
