Having posted big preseason performances the past two years, Dallas Cowboys fans should expect more of the same from this fourth-year wide receiver.

This is just a warning to all Dallas Cowboys fans. Don’t be surprised if wide receiver Brice Butler goes off during the preseason. For the last two years as a member of the Oakland Raiders, that has been his modus operandi.

A seventh round selection out of San Diego State in 2013, Butler often shines in the preseason. But hasn’t necessarily translated to the regular one.

In 2014, Butler recorded 13 receptions for 206 yards and four touchdowns in four preseason games with the Raiders. Last year, he posted 15 catches for 175 yards and one score in the preseason.

But during his 25 regular season games played in Oakland, Butler has recorded a total of 30 receptions for 383 yards and two touchdowns.

After All-Pro wide receiver Dez Bryant went down with a foot injury in their Week One matchup against the New York Giants last year, the Cowboys traded for the Raider’s Butler and their sixth round pick in 2016 for the Cowboys fifth rounder.

But a hamstring injury plagued Butler throughout his first season in Dallas. He was only able to record 12 total receptions for 258 yards in seven games for the Cowboys last season. But the 26-year old saved his best for last, recording eight of those catches in the final two games of the year.

As explained by Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett, an adjustment period is one of the drawbacks to adding a player to your roster after the regular season has already begun as they’ve missed spending the entire offseason with the team.

"“One of the challenges with players when they come into your team during the regular season is they don’t have a real foundation with you,” said Garrett told the team’s official site. “They’re kind of picking things up on the run and they’re learning game plans and they’re learning your system as you’re getting ready to play a game.”"

Butler does possess some interesting traits. Namely that he is a 6-3, 215 pound receiver that can run a blazing 4.37 forty.

For years, Cowboy fans have been begging for a speedy wide receiver who the team could pair with Bryant and one that can take the top off of defenses as a true deep threat. Butler could be that player in Dallas. And he has one year left on his rookie contract to prove that he is.

Have you heard the mantra that the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior? If that’s true, Cowboys fans can expect an offensive explosion from Butler this preseason. But just know, that production may not carry over to the regular season…if indeed the past is any indicator.
