The Dallas Cowboys need a talented youth movement
Can a talented youth movement shake up the Dallas Cowboys roster in 2016?
I am a huge fan of the Dallas Cowboys getting younger players on the roster. I try to summarize the benefits of youth by using the acronym YSFHC. That means younger, stronger, faster, healthier and cheaper. There is no escaping the grip of father time.
“I’m getting old!” is a valid excuse for forgetting one’s wallet or having a sore knee or back. I can only imagine the beating taken by a professional athlete. I’m an advocate for youth, but I don’t want to see the team get younger without talented youth. That’s a component that I need to add because it’s often overlooked.
In the 2015 NFL draft, there were six wide receivers taken in the first round. Kevin White and Breshad Perriman were injured and didn’t contribute. Only one rookie receiver had more than 1,000 yards – Amari Cooper of the Oakland Raiders. The next closest rookie was Stefon Diggs of the Minnesota Vikings. Diggs had 52 receptions, 720 yards and four touchdowns but was a 5th round pick (146th overall).
2015 NFL Draft First Round Wide Receivers Stats | |||||
Name | Overall | Team | Rec | Yards | TD |
Amari Cooper | 4th | Oakland Raiders | 72 | 1070 | 6 |
Kevin White | 7th | Chicago Bears | 0 | 0 | 0 |
DeVante Parker | 14th | Miami Dolphins | 26 | 494 | 3 |
Nelson Agholor | 20th | Philadelphia Eagles | 23 | 283 | 1 |
Breshad Perriman | 26th | Baltimore Ravens | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Phillip Dorsett | 29th | Indianapolis Colts | 18 | 225 | 1 |
In my quest for the Cowboys to get younger, I want talented youth that can contribute. Diggs had more yards than every other rookie receiver as a fifth round pick. Don’t focus on the bottom of the depth chart for position battles. I want the Cowboys to bring in guys that will challenge Dez Bryant for the number one spot. Force the front office to determine if age – better known as experience – is enough of a factor to offset being replaced by cheaper youth with that X-factor known as potential. (Side note: Did I just invent some new mathematical formula?)
I dared to mention that slot receiver Cole Beasley‘s job might be threatened by Lucky Whitehead or Ed Eagan. Just scanning the Cowboys’ roster, I see three similar receivers and wonder how many slot receivers / returners can make the roster. I find it interesting that Eagan, the undrafted free agent rookie has already signed a three-year contract for $1.62 million (according to sporttrac.com).
Name | Height | Weight | Birthday | Exp | Salary |
Ed Eagan | 5′ 11” | 183 | 06/19/93 | R | $450,000.00 |
Lucky Whitehead | 5′ 9” | 180 | 06/02/92 | 2 | $528,333.00 |
Cole Beasley | 5′ 8” | 180 | 04/26/89 | 5 | $3,356,000.00 |
Beasley is an experienced, productive fan favorite. In the end, this is still a business with a salary cap and I’m a bottom line guy. It was a business decisions with running back DeMarco Murray and defensive end DeMarcus Ware. Those aren’t the first and won’t be the last. Maybe releasing or trading Beasley saves me $2 million that can be used to pay guard Zack Martin next year. This is a league where you can’t keep everyone and pay them all what they’re worth.
Stephen Jones is proving to have a different spending philosophy than his father, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones. Beasley might be Sargento cheese while Eagan and Whitehead might be the discount brand or even Easy Cheese in a can. In the end – maybe cheese is cheese. If Stephen believes the bargain brands can contribute to the team, Beasley (and a few other veteran players) might get tossed by the magazines near the cash register.
