Rumor: Cowboys coaches like Ezekiel Elliott; Others want defenders
The co-host of 105.3 The FAN’s Ben and Skin Show tweets a rumor that the Dallas Cowboys coaches like Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott, while others prefer two defenders.
In just over a week, the question that has been plaguing Dallas Cowboys fans for the entire year will finally be answered: Who will the Cowboys draft with the fourth overall pick?
The speculation concerning that answer has run the gambit of all of the top prospects in this draft class. From names like Florida State defensive back Jalen Ramsey, Ohio State defensive end Joey Bosa and quarterbacks like California’s Jared Goff and North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz. Some of the more out of the box mocked choices include Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch and Eastern Kentucky’s pass rusher Noah Spence.
But the most interesting name is likely Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott. Although the Cowboys have a 1,000+ yard rusher returning to their lineup in Darren McFadden, and they just signed free agent veteran Alfred Morris last month, Dallas stills seems interested in adding a young runner to the mix.
Honestly, the idea of adding a running back with the fourth overall pick appeared to be nothing more than a pipe dream. But now, one Dallas media member claims to have heard word that those dreams could actually become reality.
Jeff “Skin” Wade, the co-host of 105.3 The FAN’s afternoon drive show ‘The Ben and Skin Show’, sent out a tweet Tuesday night claiming he’s hearing the Cowboys coaching staff want Dallas to draft Elliott fourth overall. But the organization is allegedly split right now, with members of the Cowboys front office and scouting department preferring defensive prospects Ramsey or Bosa.
A staple of the DFW sports scene for several years, Wade is a trusted source of information. Still, this claim should be treated as rumor until confirmed (which it will likely never be) and taken with a grain of salt. Remember, this is the time when NFL teams tend to leak false information to the public in the hopes it spurs another team into action.
As a prospect, Elliott landing in Dallas certainly makes sense. The Cowboys had great success when former running back DeMarco Murray led the league in rushing back in 2014. ESPN Draft Guru Mel Kiper Jr. even recently described Elliott as the Cowboys possible newest version of Emmitt Smith.
Ezekiel ran for 1,821 yards and 23 touchdowns in 13 games last season for the Buckeyes. He posted 1,878 rushing yards and 18 scores the season before. Ezekiel is the undisputed top running back in this class and likely the only one to be chosen in the first round.
But there are plenty of running backs in this draft class who could find success behind Dallas’ dominate offensive line. And they can be had for a much cheaper price tag than the fourth overall pick.
If what Wade’s claims is true, I’d love to be a fly on the wall during those closed door debates about Elliott, Bosa and Ramsey. No matter the outcome, it appears the Cowboys are destined to get a solid player out of the deal.
