If troubled quarterback Johnny Manziel can straighten himself out, it’s hard to believe Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones wouldn’t be interested in him.

No owner or general manager is under more scrutiny than the Dallas Cowboys Jerry Jones. Everything Jones says is reported, twisted, manipulated to make outrageous headlines. That said, Jerry is more than capable of making any on looker raise an eyebrow at any given time.

Jerry has never hidden the fact he’s a fan of the former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel. He’s openly admitted he was torn between the quarterback and eventual Cowboys draft pick Zack Martin. Any comments made by Jerry Jones on the situation of the quarterback situation in Dallas, Cleveland or just draft picks seem to eventually lead back to Johnny Football.

The Cleveland Browns cut Manziel this year and he goes down as yet another first round quarterback pick that didn’t work out for them.

The Cowboys took a chance on another former Cleveland Brown quarterback in Brandon Weeden. When Weeden didn’t work out they recruited veteran journeyman Matt Cassel. He too failed to impress and the Cowboys finished the year with the NFL virgin Kellen Moore.

How did Manziel compare to the Dallas quarterbacks last season?

  • Manziel – 10 games – 57.8% completion – 7 touchdowns – 5 interceptions
  • Romo – 4 games – 68.6% completion – 5 touchdowns – 7 interceptions
  • Weeden – 5 games – 58.5% completion – 3 touchdowns – 2 interceptions
  • Cassel – 9 games – 58% completion – 5 touchdowns – 7 interceptions
  • Moore – 3 games – 58.7% – 4 touchdowns – 6 interceptions

Both Weeden and Cassel have moved onto new teams. Moore is still with the Cowboys, but there’s big question marks over whether he can replace starting quarterback Tony Romo not just long-term but even in the interim.

So with the Cowboys needing a backup and Manziel on the free market, of course they’ll sign him up right?!

Well, no.

"“The overwhelming response and the overwhelming mentality is for him, if we’re involved in any way, to help and encourage him to get it together, to get his issue improved because those issues, in my mind, not talent, are why he is free today. It’s those issues, and those issues are the overriding consideration here, and how and what basis that those can be dealt with and addressed…But … I don’t even dare, right now, go into picturing him in a training camp or an OTA or him in a ballgame. You don’t go there.” Jerry on Johnny"

The Cowboys organization are renowned for helping troubled players through turbulent issues, and it would seem that Jones’ generosity doesn’t end at those who wear a Star on their helmet.

Were Manziel to straighten himself out, it’s hard to believe Jerry wouldn’t be interested in the acquisition. But with a domestic abuse case looming, an unsuccessful spell in rehab and reports of inappropriate partying mid-season the prospect of ever seeing Manziel on the football field again is for now, unimaginable.
