Over the weekend, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo expressed his desire for the Cowboys to select a player high in the upcoming draft who can contribute quickly. But he also understands if they choose to select a future franchise quarterback instead.

It’s been a challenging offseason for Dallas Cowboys starting quarterback Tony Romo. After being limited to just four game appearances last season due to two separate collarbone injuries, and a disappointing 4-12 season ending record, the 35-year old Romo is now being constantly bombarded with questions about his injury while the Cowboys are actively searching for his replacement.

The Cowboys have the fourth overall selection in the upcoming NFL Draft and the pick appears to be a bit of a crossroads for the franchise. Down one path, Dallas has a rare opportunity to draft a quarterback who can pick up the mantle when Romo decides to hang up his cleats. Down the other, the Cowboys could select an impact player who could contribute to the team’s success immediately, instead of simply holding a clipboard for the foreseeable future.

With his Super Bowl window rapidly closing, it’s no wonder that Romo would prefer the latter. But he’s also been around long enough to understand why the Cowboys would choose to draft his ultimate successor with their high first round pick.

"“I think you always want someone who can come in and help your football team quickly,” said Romo told the Star-Telegram on Saturday. “So, in that regard, we’re all excited about getting a player who can help us. At that spot you can get an impactful player, so that’s about the only good thing that comes out of the season…If there’s a franchise [quarterback], you always have to look into that…Good thing I don’t have to make those decisions, but I think we’ll get a good player there.”"

One of the top two quarterback prospect in this draft class, North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz and California’s Jared Goff, are expected to be available when the Cowboys select fourth overall in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft in April. Either player would be seen as the future replacement for Romo if selected, and likely spend the next two to four years learning behind him.

If the Cowboys elect to address the quarterback position at some point later in the draft, then a defensive playmaker like Ohio State defensive end Joey Bosa, Florida State defensive back Jalen Ramsey or UCLA linebacker Myles Jack seem to be likely candidates to be chosen with Dallas’ top pick. Any one of these three rookies would be an instant upgrade to the Cowboys defense.
