Rumor: This player is at the top of the Cowboys Draft Board

One longtime NFL Draft Analyst claims he knows which college player currently sits atop the Dallas Cowboys draft board.

Now that the Super Bowl is concluded, our attention turns to the Dallas Cowboys making the necessary adjustments and additions to their roster in order to retool for a title run in 2016. Although free agency is looming, starting in March, the NFL Draft is likely the main focus for teams right now with the league’s Scouting Combine is scheduled for later this month.

Many NFL clubs actually start creating their official draft board starting a day or two after the championship game in preparation for the upcoming event in April. And the names on that board are a massively protected secret likely on par with the security of a Fort Knox. So when someone claims they know who the Cowboys most coveted college prospect is, in other words the player that currently sits at the top of their draft board, it’s certainly newsworthy.

Longtime NFL Draft Analyst and DraftInsider.net founder Tony Pauline believes he knows who that Top Five prospect is.

"“One team that would not be happy to see Jalen Ramsey going so early are the Dallas Cowboys as I’m told he’s presently graded as the top player on their board,” reported Pauline on DraftInsider.net Wednesday afternoon."

By no means is this breaking news as Ramsey is considered by many to be the top defensive player in this draft class. What’s surprising is it flies in the face of recent speculation that the Cowboys will likely use the fourth overall selection in the upcoming draft on a quarterback such as North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz or California’s Jared Goff.

Obviously, this news is only a rumor and should be treated as such. Still, the defensive back out of Florida State makes a lot of sense for the Cowboys. Last season, Dallas ranked dead last in turnovers. Ramsey is a playmaker that can occupy any position in the defensive backfield, a quality we already know the Cowboys covet. It’s that same versatility that the Cowboys saw in Connecticut defensive back Byron Jones, whom they drafted in the first round last year.

The 6-1, 202 pound Ramsey was the first true freshman since former Cowboy and Hall of Famer Deion Sanders to start at Florida State. In his three years with the Seminoles, the young defensive back (who played both cornerback and safety) recorded 180 tackles, 23 pass breakups, and had three interceptions while starting in 41 consecutive games.

With last season’s starting cornerback Morris Claiborne currently being an unrestricted free agent, and the impending $9.1 million price tag for underperforming veteran corner Brandon Carr in 2016, the Cowboys could quickly revamp their defensive backfield by adding a player like Ramsey. Combined with the expected return of veteran cornerback Orlando Scandrick from a season-ending knee injury, and Dallas could afford to move on from both Carr and Claiborne this offseason.

But certainly a lot could change between now and April’s draft. Already considered a Top Five player, Ramsey’s value could actual go up if he performs as well as many believe he will in the upcoming Scouting Combine. It might even put the Cowboys out of reach of the talented defender at the fourth overall spot.
