Is Laquon Treadwell too talented for the Cowboys to pass up?

Despite having several more pressing needs across the Dallas Cowboys roster, could a wide receiver actually be too good to pass up with the fourth overall pick in April’s draft?

As long as there has been an NFL Draft, there has been the difficult choice of selecting players based on their talent level or their ability to fill needs on your roster. The Dallas Cowboys face that same franchise-changing decision this year as they possess the fourth overall pick in the upcoming event. Despite several more pressing needs across their roster, could a talented wide receiver actually be too good for them to pass up on with their top pick in April?

Well, the good folks over at Pro Football Focus seem to believe so, as they have the Cowboys drafting Ole Miss wide recevier Laquon Treadwell fourth overall in the upcoming draft.

"“Dallas could have their eye on Jalen Ramsey here, but they go with Treadwell to pair with Dez Bryant, a player Treadwell has gotten compared to in the past,” explained Steve Palazzolo earlier this week on the analytic website. “Treadwell can make plays down the field or after the catch (forced 17 missed tackles), and stocking up on playmakers is one way to get the Cowboys back to the top of the NFC East.”"

Although wide recevier isn’t a pressing need in Dallas, the Cowboys did discover a major flaw within their recevier corps last season. When All-Pro wide out Dez Bryant went down with a foot injury in Week One, no other Dallas recevier stepped up to replace his production. The Cowboys have a lack of playmakers at the position.

Treadwell would certainly fill that need. Compared to Bryant by many draft experts, the 6-2, 210 pound prospect is a violent receiver who goes after passes, and who possesses a massive catching radius. Treadwell is hands down the best player at his position and a legitimate top ten player in this draft class. As a junior at Ole Miss this season, the talented 20-year old recorded 82 receptions for 1,153 yards and 11 touchdowns.

One thing fans should keep in mind is that Bryant is 27-years old. And he just signed a five-year, $70 million contract in July, which makes him a free agent in 2020 when he’s 32-years old. If Dallas elects to pick Treadwell fourth overall in this upcoming draft, he could potentially be under a rookie deal with the Cowboys (if they elect to take his fifth-year option) through 2020. If this young man is as talented as many project, than his next big contract doesn’t come up until Bryant career is likely going downhill. Thus making Treadwell Dallas’ perfect replacement for Dez in 2020, when the young man will be 27-years old himself.

The fact is there are plenty of scouting and evaluation opportunities between now and April to turn draft boards upside down. But if Treadwell is still on the board when the Cowboys number is called early in the first round of the draft, can Dallas afford to pass him up if he’s listed as the most talented player on theirs?
