Tony Romo: Not the Cowboys Savior, but close enough

We will discuss the importance of Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo’s return from injury and how he could help turn things around in Dallas.

As things stand now heading into Week 11 against the Miami Dolphins, the Dallas Cowboys would have a top 10 draft pick in the upcoming 2016 NFL Draft.

To me, that’s still somewhat unbelievable considering the fact that the Cowboys were looked at as being one of the top teams to not only make the playoffs at the beginning of the 2015 season, but also perhaps contend for another Super Bowl title.

That is one reason why I hate off-season predictions because you never know how each individual team will perform from year to year. And no one can predict what might happen throughout the season that can change the course of any franchise.

For America’s Team, the 2015 NFL season started going down the drain when quarterback Tony Romo broke his clavicle against the Philadelphia Eagles early in the season. Since the injury, the Cowboys have looked nothing like a playoff contender and have managed to lose every game since Romo’s departure

Now that Romo is able to return to the lineup, I hear people wondering whether or not the Cowboys should just go ahead and throw in the towel and tank the season so that they can have a high draft choice in the upcoming 2016 NFL Draft.

I find that way of thinking completely preposterous. Not only does Romo’s return give the Cowboys a chance to win more games, but the team is not completely out of contention of making a push for a playoff run and even winning the lowly NFC East division.

That’s not to say that it won’t be difficult. With Romo back the lineup it will not only help the offense fire on all cylinders once again, but his return will also help the defense as well.

Offensively, the Cowboys will be able to open up the entire playbook with Romo back at the helm. With backup quarterbacks Brandon Weeden and Matt Cassel, offensive coordinator Scott Linehan had to condense the playbook. Especially for Cassel, who joined the team after the season was already underway.

I personally don’t believe that Romo will show much rust against the Dolphins. I fully expect the offense to be at full force on Sunday afternoon.

The defense also benefits from having Romo back taking snaps from center Travis Frederick. The offense should be able to control the clock more and not put the defense in bad situations like what has happened over the last seven weeks.

Defensively, coordinator Rod Marinelli can hopefully keep his defensive line rotation a little more fresh by not having them on the field as much. That would help prevent them from having another fourth-quarter meltdown due to fatigue.

Romo’s return shouldn’t be viewed as a save all for this team. The entire group needs to step up their game and stop committing the stupid mental mistakes that have been getting them into trouble and keeping them from winning these close games.

About the only thing that Romo’s return guarantees is that the team will have their franchise quarterback back on the field. And that should make them a more competitive unit overall.
