What kind of Dallas Cowboys fan are you?
The Dallas Cowboys would be an unfortunate franchise if they were controlled those fans. You know the kind.
When quarterback Tony Romo threw an interception that sealed a NFC Divisional Round playoff loss to the New York Giants in 2007, he’s not clutch, they declared. When head coach Jason Garrett led the team to an 8-8 finish in his first full season, get a real coach, they demanded. Nobody needs to be reminded how many times owner and general manager Jerry Jones has seen his job approval come under fire.

So right now, sitting at 2-6 and experiencing easily the worst start in the Jason Garrett era, ask yourself this right now: which kind of fan are you? Because when these three pieces eventually do win together, and it’s not like they never have, it won’t be be for those fans.
Did you demand belligerently that punt returner Cole Beasley be cut after muffing the game-sealing punt in a loss to the New York Giants two weeks ago (that of course, the game before his monster performance on Sunday)? If you did, you’re probably one of those fans.
Are you one of those people who has already declared the 2015 season over? You’re definitely one of those fans. And you won’t deserve to partake in the thrill when this team goes on an epic run.
Because here’s the deal: entering the final game without Romo under center, the Dallas Cowboys are two games in the loss column behind the division-leading New York Giants. Two. That’s it. You would think the world was ending for America’s Team, based on media coverage. But whether it feels like months or not since this team was able to capture a victory, the NFC East is not a good division. If you think the season is over, you’re one of those fans.
Am I predicting an NFC East title? No, not necessarily. But your duty as a Dallas Cowboys fan is to cheer the team, its players, its coaches, its owner, as long as there’s a chance. There’s a chance.
So now, suppose this team goes on a run and wins the NFC East with a record of 9-7. That’ll be pretty cool, right? If you’re one of those fans, you’ll certainly still enjoy it a little bit. It’ll be fun. But you’ll know who you are. And deep down inside, you’ll know you quit. You’ll know that they didn’t win it for you.
And somewhere, the real Cowboys fans will be celebrating. They’ll be the ones who opened themselves up to heartbreak because they believed. They were willing to gamble on a 2-6 team, because it was their team. They’re the real fans – the ones America’s Team is still playing hard for.
