Dallas Cowboys: Embrace the positives
By Brian Martin
Sometimes as a sports fan we all have a difficult time trying to find the positives in a bad season. This is especially true for the Dallas Cowboys 2015 NFL season.
There was such high hopes heading into the season after the Cowboys advanced deep into the playoffs in 2014 and nearly made it to the NFC championship game that ended in a questionable call.

Yes, are all familiar with the “Dez catch” and anybody who knows football knows that Dez Bryant absolutely caught the ball, but because of the wording of the rule it was determined he didn’t maintain possession all the way to the ground. Even to this day no one can really say for certain what constitutes a catch and what doesn’t.
What I’m getting at here is that a lot of people tend to dwell on the negatives that surround their teams, but it’s time that we start embracing the positives for a change.
I challenge you to look for the good things that the Cowboys are doing and keep in mind what the team is trying to accomplish long-term instead of dwelling on the short-term success.
Here are a few of the positives that I have seen so far in the 2015 season:
- Defensive back Byron Jones isn’t playing like a rookie. He has been able to handle every task that the coaching staff has thrown at him since being drafted in the first round in the 2015 NFL Draft and has really helped solidify the secondary for the Cowboys defense. Not very many defensive backs in the NFL are asked to keep New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski in check and can actually succeed, but he was able to do just that. Jones has proven himself as a starter and his future is bright.
- Over the last two weeks the Cowboys have seen a resurgence of the running game and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that is exactly when La’el Collins earned the starting job at left guard over veteran Ronald Leary. Collins is another rookie player that has a bright future with the Cowboys and has proven that the talent evaluators that ranked him as a top 15 talent in the 2015 NFL Draft were not wrong. His journey to the NFL might not have been ideal, but he has proven himself capable of being a dominant player.
- Without quarterback Tony Romo in the field to lead the team other players have had to step up in the leadership role both on offense and defense. In my opinion the entire team has benefited from Romo’s absence and will be better for it once he returns to the lineup in a few weeks. It will take the entire team performing in a high level to make a push for the playoffs once Romo returns from his injury.
- The return of wide receiver Dez Bryant will not only help the passing game, especially with another week to work with backup quarterback Matt Cassel, but will also provide another passionate emotional leader that inspires the entire team to raise the level of their game. Look for all the wide receivers to benefit from the return of Bryant.
- As bad as the season has gone so far there is still a chance for the Cowboys to make the playoffs and even win the NFC East division. The Cowboys haven’t won a game since Tony Romo went down with an injury in week two against the Philadelphia Eagles, but their season is far from over. It may take them winning out the rest the season or some things to fall their way, but don’t look for them to lay down and play for a better draft position anytime soon.
These are just a few of the positive things that have taken place this season and I would remind fans that just because the season isn’t going as expected, things could be much worse.
It’s time to start looking at things as a glass half-full instead of the glass half-empty.

These few positives that I have mentioned should give you some hope not only for the rest of the 2015 season, but for the future of the franchise as well.
