Dallas Cowboys: Winning Takes Care of Everything
With the Dallas Cowboys sitting at the bottom of the NFC East, I’m still weirdly optimistic about the season. I know #CowboyNation needs some positives because we’re sitting at 2 – 4. Remarkably, we’re still in the division race. The other teams haven’t had their bye week yet, so that makes the standings look worse than they really are.
Losing to the Giants was disappointing, but you can’t have four turnovers – including a pick six and allow a 100 yard kickoff return. Of course, that kickoff return was by former Cowboy and Devin Hester clone, the irreplaceable and future Hall of Famer Dwayne Harris. I’m sorry, that went a little overboard, but I’m just having fun with our long term readers. Harris is still my dude and I campaigned for him over Cole Beasley and Terrance Williams. I just wanted him to be successful against OTHER teams.

On another positive note, I finally got my sprinkles from offensive coordinator Scott Linehan. Now my question is – What took so long? The Cowboys ran end-arounds, fake end-arounds and put receiver Lucky Whitehead in the backfield. I can’t believe we needed a bye-week to add those plays to the playbook. When you lose Tony Romo and Dez Bryant, there’s nothing wrong with hitting an opponent with the kitchen sink. Hopefully, we’ll see more sprinkles next week – like a flea flicker mixed with an alley-oop.

I’m not surprised that Greg Hardy was – pick an adjective – fired up, emotional, crazy or passionate. His actions keep us from mentioning that Brandon Carr couldn’t cover an grain of salt with a deployed parachute. During his next post-game locker room interview, I hope Hardy says, “I’m just here so I won’t get fined.” Apparently, that phrase is better received than “No Comment”.
If anything, I would’ve expected Brandon Weeden to be ranting on the sideline. Linehan supporters claim the game plan and play calling is based on the limitations of Weeden. I ask – How limited is Weeden’s skill set that the Cowboys couldn’t execute a reverse or jet sweep? Where was Weeden’s help from the offensive line and the running game?
Speaking of Weeden, why is he still on the roster? Matt Cassel threw an interception on three straight possessions. How many interceptions could Cassel throw against the Giants before head coach Jason Garrett would consider putting Weeden into the game? I’ll set the over/under at 30.
Once again, I’m going to pull for Kellen Moore to occupy that back-up quarterback position. You’re going to tell me that college is different, but he didn’t throw many in college. Don’t we base professional expectations based on their collegiate performances? Perhaps you’re in the group that believes having the best long jump translates to being a great NFL cornerback.

In my opinion, Cassel played well and looked like he’d been out there before. After having some success, I think he got caught feeling himself a little. Cassel confessed, “A few of those throws, I’m thinking I can get it in there.” I think we’ve all been guilty of it. Personally, after a few good golf shots I’m trying to do the impossible, like hitting a putter 300 yards over water and around a tree with a baby draw.
The Giants were who we thought they were and we let them off the hook. To defeat the Seattle Seahawks, it’s cliché, but they have to finish the game with the most points. They’re 3-4 and have traditionally been a below average road team.
With a win, the Cowboys will catch the Eagles and Redskins in the standings because both those teams have a bye week. Afterwards, Cowboy Nation can forget and forgive Beasley’s muffed punt, Cassel’s interceptions, Weeden’s losses and Hardy’s rant with a win on Sunday. Like Tiger Woods said, “Winning takes care of everything.”
