Will the Cowboys be buyers or sellers at trade deadline?
By Brian Martin
The NFL has an important date quickly approaching that you may or may not be aware of.
On November 3 at 4 PM EST, the trade deadline will go into effect and teams will be unable to acquire/trade players throughout the rest of the 2015 NFL season.

Unfortunately, in the National Football League, the trading of players really isn’t as common as it is in the NBA or even in the MLB. I don’t really suspect that we will see a lot of last-minute trades being made, but anything is possible.
With the trade deadline quickly approaching it got me to thinking whether or not the Dallas Cowboys will be an active participant, either selling or buying.
A case could be made that they could use this opportunity to trade away some of the players on the roster that haven’t been able to find a specific role on the team or that have been replaced by younger players.
For instance, tight end Gavin Escobar and offensive guard Ronald Leary are two names that come to mind that could possibly draw some trade interest around the league.
Escobar is yet another failed attempt to find a tight end that will be able to replace future Hall of Famer Jason Witten in the future when he finally decides to hang up his cleats. Drafting tight ends in the second round has not worked out well thus far by the Cowboys.
Escobar is more of a receiving tight end that has become popular over the last several years in the NFL and for some reason the Cowboys have yet to find a role for him on offense.
The fact that Escobar has rarely been used in the absence of wide receiver Dez Bryant should at least indicate that the coaching staff either lacks the confidence in his play, or can’t determine how to incorporate him into the game plan.
For these reasons I think that the Cowboys organization would be wise to explore the trade interest that Escobar could draw from other teams around the NFL.
Unlike Escobar, offensive guard Ronald Leary has been a starter for the offensive line the past several seasons and his trade interest could be even higher than Escobar’s if he became available.
It appears as if the Cowboys are ready to hand the reins over to their talented rookie offensive lineman La’el Collins. Now whether this is due to poor performance on Leary’s part or whether the Cowboys organization simply believes that Collins is the better option at this point has yet to be determined.
It could possibly be that Leary’s play has slipped because he is still battling nagging injuries, but if the Cowboys truly believe that Collins is the future then Leary could possibly be a tradable commodity.
Of course, this is all speculation and there is really no way to tell whether or not America’s Team is interested in trading away any of the players that are on the current roster. We do know however that as general manager, Jerry Jones loves wheeling and dealing so just about anything is possible.
Jerry Jones could even be on the phone as we speak looking to acquire some more players that could come in and contribute to the team.
We have already seen the team trade for running back Christine Michael, quarterback Matt Cassel, wide receiver Brice Butler, and defensive lineman David Irving, so who knows what’s in the works.
I for one would love to see the team look into perhaps adding another wide receiver to help out.
Unfortunately, I think they would’ve done that during their bye week so that the newly acquired player would have time to come in and learn the playbook, as well as get accustomed to how things are done under head coach Jason Garrett.
Still, I can’t seem to shake the feeling that a player like Cordarrelle Patterson of the Minnesota Vikings could be acquired via trade and come in and help the Cowboys passing game.
Patterson plays in a Norv Turner offensive scheme, which is similar to what the Cowboys use and one of the reasons why they traded for quarterback Matt Cassel.
Patterson has seemed to fall out of favor with the Vikings and currently sits probably fourth or fifth on the wide receiver depth chart. He could be acquired via trade relatively cheaply and I think it would be worth a look for the Cowboys organization.
Like I mentioned earlier, this is all speculation and there is no possible way to know whether the Cowboys might be buyers or sellers with the upcoming trade deadline quickly approaching. They could possibly keep things as they are and let the trade deadline pass them by without making any more moves.
Do you think the Cowboys will be buyers or sellers before the trade line?
