Back To The Future: Dallas Cowboys Select Tyron Smith Or J.J. Watt?
By Brian Martin
Let’s propose head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, Jason Garrett, decided to enlist the services of Back To The Future’s Marty McFly and fire up the old DeLorean for a trip to the past. They will travel back in time setting the date for Thursday, April 28, 2011 and head over to the Radio City Music Hall in New York City for the 2011 NFL Draft.
Why, do you ask, is the Cowboys head coach heading back to the 2011 NFL Draft for?
Well, there has been speculation as to whether or not Garrett would still make the choice of drafting USC offensive tackle Tyron Smith with the Cowboys ninth overall selection in the first round or would he instead draft J.J. Watt, the destructive defensive end out of Wisconsin. In reality, Watt ended up being drafted 11th overall by the Houston Texans only two selections Smith.

It can be a little difficult to compare these two players since one plays on the offensive side of the ball and the other, on the defensive. But it is undeniable that both Smith and Watt are arguably the best players at their given positions.
Watt has started 64 consecutive games for Houston and has earned numerous awards for his play during his four-year career in the NFL. The veteran defensive end already holds the Texans franchise record for sacks and forced fumbles.
He has been voted to three consecutive Pro Bowls and been voted AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year twice in 2012 and 2014. Watt is also the only player in NFL history to record two 20+ sack seasons.
Smith has started 63 of 64 career games with the Dallas Cowboys. As a rookie, Smith started at the right tackle position and then switched over to his current position protecting quarterback Tony Romo‘s blind side as the left tackle. The veteran offensive tackle has been named to two consecutive Pro Bowls and has become one of the best left tackles in the entire NFL.
Both Smith and Watt have recently signed mega-million multi-year contracts with their respective teams that will make them key fixtures for their franchises for years to come. They are both players with high character and a love for the game.
They are both professionals on and off the field and are active in the local community. They are exactly the kind of players that organizations like to have on the team and that coaches truly enjoy coaching.
The question remains however, when Garrett and the Cowboys organization still draft Smith over Watt?
Personally, I don’t think they would even though Watt is a once-in-a-lifetime player and already destined to more than likely be voted into the Pro Football Hall Of Fame.
Smith’s importance to America’s Team and Romo is undeniable and dominant left tackles don’t come around every day.
What would you do if you were able to catch a ride with Marty McFly in his DeLorean and have a chance to choose between Smith and Watt?
