While most of the Dallas Cowboys team captains return from 2016, this analyst gives his selections to fill the team’s vacancies.

Team captains are selected to lead their teammates by example. Captains enjoy the honors that come with the title, such as representing their team for the coin toss and receiving a patch with the letter C on their game day jersey.

By NFL rule, each team can assign up to six players as team captains. This leaves two possible vacancies along side returning captain’s Jason Witten (tight end), Travis Frederick (center), linebacker Sean Lee (linebacker) and kicker Dan Bailey (kicker).

Feature writer for DallasCowboys.com, Jeff Sullivan, recently cast his public opinion vote for two new Cowboys captains. Noting that the team needs a representative from both sides of the ball, Sullivan expressed;

"“Seems like campaigns start earlier and earlier nowadays, so I would like to kick off my own for Dez Bryant and Orlando Scandrick to become team captains this season,” Sullivan wrote on the team’s official website."

While Bryant (wide receiver) isn’t exactly known for his calm demeanor, Sullivan goes on to note that during recent minicamps;

"“What did stand out for me was Dez and Scandrick were acting like leaders, working with their younger teammates, saying the right things in the locker room,” Sullivan continued. “Easily the most even-keeled I’ve seen Dez in terms of talking with the media.”"

Bryant is entering his eighth season while longtime defensive back Scandrick is going into his tenth year. The pair joins only Witten and long snapper L.P. LaDouceur with eight or more years as a Dallas Cowboy.

While the choice of Scandrick for a defensive captain seems reasonable, there may be conflict in choosing a new offensive captain. Typically a quarterback is among the captains, especially ones exhibiting excellence in leadership. And Cowboys second year quarterback Dak Prescott has definitely shown that in his limited time with the team.
