The Dallas Cowboys added a new quarterback to their roster on Monday by claiming Zac Dysert off waivers from the Arizona Cardinals.

Following the release of veteran Tony Romo in early April, the Dallas Cowboys depth chart at quarterback behind new starter Dak Prescott was very thin. Only Kellen Moore survived the offseason and the Cowboys didn’t select a quarterback in the NFL draft.

Instead, Dallas decided to bring in a couple undrafted rookie free agents in Austin Appleby and Cooper Rush to compete for a job while also giving rookie minicamp and OTA’s a couple lively arms.

On Monday, the Cowboys opted to address the position a bit more by claiming quarterback Zac Dysert off waivers from the Arizona Cardinals, according to several sources. Dysert was cut by the Cardinals last Friday as they already had five quarterbacks on the roster.

A seventh round selection out of Miami (OH) in 2013, Dysert has yet to see any regular season action despite spending time with the Denver Broncos, Chicago Bears, Houston Texans, Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins and Arizona. Moore also lacked regular season experience prior to coming to Dallas in 2015, spending his first three seasons with the Detroit Lions.

Last offseason, the former Ohio state high school player of the year back in 2007 spent all but one week on the Cardinals’ practice squad. The 27-year old Dysert will now try to win a back-up role in Dallas on a team many believe will only carry two quarterbacks on their active roster this upcoming season. He is on a one-year deal worth $615K.

During his final year at Miami (OH), Dysert threw for 3,483 yards, 25 touchdowns and 12 interceptions completing just 62.9% of his passes. The four-year starter broke school passing records held by Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. (passing attempts, completions, and yardage)

The Cowboys waived Appleby to make room for their newest quarterback.
