Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones will be inducted in the NFL’s Hall of Fame, to the dismay of some disgruntled fans.

It’s hard to talk about the Dallas Cowboys without someone mentioning Jerry Jones. Although the Cowboys’ longtime owner and general manager is usually cast as the villain in such discussions, the NFL would certainly not be the entertainment force it is today without him. And now Jones’ legacy, for better or for worse, will forever be immortalized as a member of the NFL’s prestigious Hall of Fame.

On Saturday, it was announced that Jones will become a Hall of Fame inductee along with six others. Those others being running backs LaDainian Tomlinson and Terrell Davis, quarterback Kurt Warner, safety Kenny Easley, defensive end Jason Taylor, and kicker Morten Andersen.

Jones purchased the Cowboys franchise in February of 1989. His firing of longtime Dallas head coach Tom Landry turned many in the loyal fan base against the billionaire owner early on. And the fact the team went 1-15 later that year after trading their best player away, running back Herschel Walker, mid-season only spurred more hate towards Jones.

But soon the tune changed when Dallas won three Super Bowls in four years in the early 1990’s. Yet, it’s now been over twenty years since the Cowboys won their last championship. And Jones is view by many as the primary reason why.

The longtime owner’s decision to part ways with head coach Jimmy Johnson after back-to-back Super Bowl wins, trades for players like wide receivers Joey Galloway and Roy Williams and many other controversial moves have made Jones the target of fan hatred for years.

Still, the Cowboys are always relevant. And that’s due in large part to Jones and his snake-oil salesman pitch ever year. The most public and vocal owner or general manager in the NFL, the 74-year old is always ready to sell that season’s version of America’s Team as Super Bowl bound.

Although there are certainly several reasons to dislike Jones and his decisions over the years, you can not argue with the fact he is a genuine Cowboys fan, through and through. Jerry wants nothing more than to see his franchise succeed every single season. And it’s that passion that has made him one of the most powerful and influential owners in all of sports.
