After selecting a quarterback in the fourth round of last month’s NFL Draft, are the Dallas Cowboys done looking for a back-up for Tony Romo this season?

After missing out on Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch in the latter half of the first round of last month’s NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys opted not to address the quarterback position until the fourth round. With the 135th overall selection, the Cowboys drafted Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott.

With veteran Kellen Moore and second-year pro Jameill Showers already on the roster backing up 36-year old starter Tony Romo, the addition of Prescott locked the position for many fans for the rest of the season. But is Dallas indeed done addressing the back-up quarterback spot behind Romo in 2016?

Despite having tremendous success in college and a very supportive coach in offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, fifth-year quarterback Kellen Moore has only played in three regular seasons games in the NFL. All of them at the end of the season last year. And all of them were losses.

Showers was an undrafted rookie free agent out of UT-El Paso in 2015 and spent most of last season on the practice squad, which included playing safety on the scout team. Finally, Prescott is a developmental player who has the traits to be special. But it’s unlikely he could be more effective than Moore or Showers in his rookie season.

All three leave the Cowboys in a similar vulnerable position as they were in last season when Dallas was forced to turn to the likes of Brandon Weeden and Matt Cassel when Romo fractured his collarbone twice.

Likely not wanting a repeat of that disaster in Dallas, I’d expect the Cowboys are not quite done addressing the quarterback position behind Romo. Although Moore is certainly the top candidate for the primary back-up role at this point, Dallas has always prided themselves in their ability to create competition during training camp and throughout the preseason.

This year will likely be no different. But one area the Cowboys might not be able to turn to find suitable competition at the quarterback position is in free agency. Currently, it’s a waste land.

Outside of the pricey Ryan Fitzpatrick, the untouchable Johnny Manziel, and the elderly Michael Vick; the free agent market is frankly barren. I’m not sure names like Josh Johnson, Ryan Lindley or Matt Flynn would be much of an upgrade over what Dallas already has on it’s roster.

The Cowboys could turn to the undrafted rookie free agent market to find a possible hidden gem. For example, Oregon quarterback Vernon Adams has recently re-entered the open market after a failed tryout with the Seattle Seahawks.

But it’s more likely the Cowboys would need to make a trade to secure a veteran to back-up Romo in 2016. Quarterbacks like the L.A. Rams Nick Foles, the Tampa Buccaneers Mike Glennon, and the Cincinnati Bengals AJ McCarron were all rumored to be on the trading block at some point this offseason. But I’d expect their price tags to be to high for the Cowboys.

Ultimately, I believe the Cowboys will be hoping a veteran quarterback hits the waiver wire sometime this offseason so they can scoop him up. But the bottom line is if Dallas truly want to create competition at the quarterback spot this offseason, then their likely not done addressing the position.
