As the 2016 NFL Draft nears, who do you want the Dallas Cowboys to select with the fourth overall pick?

In just over two days, all the speculation will finally come to an end.  The drama, suspense and wonder will all be cast off to the side, replaced with conjecture as to why the Dallas Cowboys made the pick they did and (maybe) how they could have done better.

Thursday, April 28th will kick off a three day event that hopefully will add several players to the Cowboys roster who can come in right away and have an impact.

With nine picks in the 2016 NFL Draft and three picks in the top seventy, Dallas has a very good chance to improve the talent on this team, if they make the right choices when it’s their turn on the clock.

The truth is that all nine picks are important.  As I’ve discussed in previous articles, the Cowboys have not been very good at selecting players in the later rounds.  This is definitely something that they need to improve upon, sooner rather than later but today we are going to focus on the prized possession of this draft.

The fourth overall selection.

Before we get into our poll where you, the reader, gets to make your selection on behalf of this team, we are going to weed out a few choices and explain why they are not an option.

Let’s start with the position a lot of you were kind of hoping would be in the mix…

The quarterbacks.

Whether you wanted Carson Wentz or Jared Goff to sit around for a few years wearing a ball cap and listening to calls coming from above while Tony Romo did his thing on the field or not, that dream is all but dead.

The Los Angeles Rams trade with the Tennessee Titans to move up to the number one spot did everything to help the Dallas Cowboys, including removing this option from discussion.

In an almost certain turn of events, those two gentleman will be taken back-to-back as both the Rams and the Cleveland Browns, picking second, are starving for a franchise quarterback.

I suppose there is an off chance that the Browns could skip on taking a quarterback, given the addition of Robert Griffin in the offseason and the fact that it’s the Browns and they rarely do anything right, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Let’s assume that position is off the table.

Another position we can probably remove from discussion at fourth overall is wide receiver.  Yes, it’s an amazing dream to think of Dez Bryant on one side and Laquon Treadwell on the other but there are bigger needs and holes to fill.

One other name that was very hot early in the process has tailed off of late is UCLA linebacker Myles Jack.  He’s extremely talented, versatile and the type of guy you want on your team… in theory.

The problem, according to this tweet from Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News, is his knee.

More from The Landry Hat

There is no way you can gamble a pick this high on a guy who might only play for six years or someone who spends more time on the trainer’s table than the practice and playing field.  Let someone else roll those dice.

Lastly, there is the curious case of Laremy Tunsil.  There is a realistic possibility that he is very available at fourth overall.  In some ways, this would be a steal.  There are several pundits who rate him as the overall best player in the draft.  You could move him to right tackle, where he could take over for Doug Free and complete the most heralded offensive line in the history of the game.

Ultimately, if he is available, the Dallas Cowboys are hoping and praying someone with a need for a franchise left tackle makes a phone call and offers them a king’s ransom.

That leaves the following players.

The choice is yours…
