Mel Kiper's latest NFL Mock Draft for the Dallas Cowboys has me giddy with playmaking excitement

Cowboys draft Ole Miss WR Jonathan Mingo at No. 58 overall

With their second pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Kiper predicts the Cowboys will select Ole Miss wide receiver Jonathan Mingo. Although we consider running back and defensive tackle to be more pressing needs, you can never have too many playmakers on offense.

Mingo is widely considered a Day 2 pick, but his mix of size (6-foot-2-, 220 pounds) and speed (4.46-second 40-yard dash) has garnered the receiver a lot of attention heading into the draft. In a previous write-up for Jonathan Mingo, ESPN’s Matt Bowen praised the receiver’s “powerful frame, route detail and production after the catch.” For the Cowboys, his ability to play both outside and in the slot could be used to create all sorts of match-up problems for opposing defenses.

The Cowboys selected South Alabama Jaguars wide receiver Jalen Tolbert in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft with the hope of replacing some of the offense lost by the departure of Amari Cooper. Unfortunately, Tolbert’s rookie season was a total disappointment. He caught just two receptions for 12 yards. It’s possible Tolbert could have a bounce back sophomore season, but it doesn’t hurt to draft another receiver as a precaution.

Taking Mingo with the second round pick also gives the Cowboys more depth at receiver should something unfortunate happen to CeeDee Lamb or Brandin Cooks, or if Michael Gallup is simply unable to return to form. He could also eventually serve as the team’s No. 2 opposite Lamb as Cooks is only under contract through 2024.

Dallas has invited multiple big-named receivers to The Star in Frisco, including Zay Flowers (Boston College), Jalin Hyatt (Tennessee) and Quinton Johnston (TCU). Assuming they can’t land any these targets, Jonathan Mingo, who is ranked No. 8 among wide receivers on Kiper’s Big Board, would be a heck of a consolation prize.

Do you agree with Mel Kiper Jr.’s latest predictions for the Dallas Cowboys in rounds one and two of the 2023 NFL Draft? Who would you rather see the team draft with their first two picks? One thing is for certain, however, and that is Dak Prescott (seemingly) would sign off on these selections in a heartbeat.
