4 things Cowboys’ Mike McCarthy needs to do to keep his job this year
1. Move on from Joe Philbin
As much as we blame offensive coordinator Kellen Moore for the issues the offense has had over the years with McCarthy at the helm, there is another coach that needs to have a spotlight shined on his inability to get the most out of his players, and that’s Joe Philbin. These two go back a long way from their time with the Packers, but eventually, friendships are tested and coaching changes are needed for the betterment of a team. Philbin’s time with the Cowboys hasn’t been stellar, with his inability to find a reliable left guard, constant issues at center, and the debacle that was the 2020 season at left and right tackle.
Philbin’s poor coaching directly affects Moore’s ability to call plays, and it’s pretty apparent. McCarthy will need to decide quickly if Philbin’s time with the team has come to an end after the amount of draft picks used to rebuild this offensive line. If it isn’t working and the offensive line still looks like there hasn’t been any improvement, then the time has come for him to fire his longtime friend and find someone else who can take the talent along this OL and return them to the once dominant unit they once were.
I wouldn’t mind seeing Marc Colombo back wearing a star.
