3. Clock Management

Let’s face it: Clock management over the years for the Cowboys has been an issue, no matter who the head coach has been.

From Jason Garrett’s ill-timed timeouts, to McCarthy’s ill-fated Dak Prescott called run in the middle of the field in their Wild Card playoff loss last season, the clock at one point or another becomes the enemy of the Cowboys. McCarthy has a chance to break this curse for Dallas and get them on the right track.

McCarthy has been adamant that he’s coaching the entire team, but giving his coordinators more control of what they are doing during the game. His approach is a good one, but if you’re going to give your coordinators more control, you still need to make sure that it doesn’t affect the entire team, and that’s exactly what happened at times last season. His insertion into the offensive game planning could mean that he will be able to better steer the play calling in order to preserve time, whether it be to get into field goal range or to score a touchdown to win a game.

Outside of getting the offense back on track, this might be one of the more important problems McCarthy needs to fix.
