2. Washington Commanders – Week 4

2021 Defensive Ranking: 25th

Defensive Players Lost: Tim Settle (DT), Matthew Ioannidis

Defensive Players Coming In: Phidarian Mathis (Drafted (DT), Percy Butler (Drafted (S)

Despite their defensive ranking last season, this Commanders defensive front is one of the most talented in the NFL with two very good pass rushers in the Chase Young (who’s coming back from an ACL injury) and Montez Sweat. Plus, they have Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen stuffing the run up the middle.

They have now added another Alabama defensive tackle in Mathis who will be a nice rotational piece for them after losing both Settle and Ioannidis this offseason. They will be able to test this offensive line at every spot thanks to the amount of talent they will be putting on the field.

Seeing as how Dallas will have to face this front twice a year, the game plan they use to beat them will be all about timing on Prescott’s end and making sure that Elliott and Pollard are able to assert themselves in the running game early to stop the Commanders effective pass rush off the edge. The Cowboys wanted to get bigger inside and with Smith and McGovern they will be, it will just be a matter of if they are strong enough to hold the Commanders makeshift Alabama interior defensive front long enough to give Prescott time in the passing game and Elliott and Pollard space to operate in the running game.
