5 Cowboys that have to make huge improvements this offseason
By Mark Heaney
1. CeeDee Lamb, WR
The year for the CeeDee Lamb takeover has officially begun. After two years behind Amari Cooper in the depth chart, the title of WR1 is now securely in Lamb’s corner, and the Cowboys are expecting big things.
There is no denying the ability of the newest member in the No. 88 club, but never before has Dallas expected more from their young stud. Lamb has had moments of greatness, top-tier elite play, and then his occasional struggles. That up-and-down performance is not going to cut it now.
In one offseason the wide receiver position went from a massive strength, to possibly a weakness, and the Cowboys will be calling on Lamb to blunt that fall as much as possible.
Lamb, at least last season, also had a drops problem with far too many routine plays slipping through his hands. The difference between now and then? Prescott can no longer fall back on Cooper, Wilson, and even Gallup for the beginning of this year to bail out Lamb. Now, it will consist of James Washington and rookie Jalen Tolbert if Lamb has catching issues on a Sunday.
Even if there is not a question of ability, the question of “will he deserve a massive extension” will start to bloom in the near future. If he fails to truly become the WR1 we expect him to be, it will hurt his pockets and the Cowboys’ offense badly.
I have few doubts about Lamb. While his accent to the top of the depth chart is well deserved, we can not ignore the fact that this is a big jump for him. He has yet to firmly set himself in the Justin Jefferson/Deebo Samuel class of receivers, and this year will be his best chance to do just that. It is time for Lamb to put any doubts to bed as he enters his third season in the league.
