3. McCarthy on Jake Ferguson

According to Bri Amaranthus, Ferguson was one of the last players off the field during minicamp, which is always a good sign. Although Ferguson certainly wasn’t the Cowboys’ first choice of tight ends (Jeremy Ruckert, Cade Otton, Jalen Wydermyer, and Jelani Woods all got visits), it seems the team is happy with their potential Dalton Schultz replacement.

McCarthy lit up when a reporter asked him about the rookie tight end:

"“Ferguson? Boy, what didn’t you like about him? I like the way he plays. That’s the first thing that jumped out. I like his play style. I like his aggressiveness. And I think he’s what you need at tight end. He is able to play on the ball, off the ball, he’s productive as a receiver. But I really like his play style. I don’t think you can have enough of those type of guys on your team because, not only does he play the tight end position the right way, but you can also see him on special teams. You look at Wisconsin. They’re one of the few teams in college football that use a pro punt formation. [Ferguson] was probably the only one who had any experience there, and you could see it in his understanding. He’s a very well-rounded football player.”"

Wow. Talk about high praise for a fifth-rounder.
