Round 3, Pick 90: TE Sam LaPorta

Dalton Schultz is expected to play on the franchise tag this season before hitting the open market next offseason. This selection is made suggesting Schultz moves elsewhere next season. In the third round of the mock, Jerry Jones and Co. select Iowa tight end Sam LaPorta.

Despite the fourth-round selection of Jake Ferguson a couple of weeks ago, the front office decides to dip into the Iowa tight end pool for a higher upside prospect. Iowa has a history of sending really solid tight ends into the league, including current NFL stars George Kittle and T.J Hockenson, as well as former great Dallas Clark.

The Hawkeye had a solid junior season at Iowa, hauling in 53 catches for 670 yards and three touchdowns. LaPorta is an uber-reliable pass catcher and can hold his own while blocking. He’s good when timing his block-and-releases and has a burst of speed as well.

If Schultz moves on next off-season, Ferguson may not be enough to convince the front office that they can roll with him. A low-risk, potentially high-reward selection like LaPorta could develop into a player like Schultz, if not better.
