Tyler Smith’s Cowboys Roster Fit

It looks like this pick was to address two needs instead of one. For at least this upcoming season, Dallas will move the first-rounder to guard to allow him to play right away. He is also seen as a potential successor to left tackle Tyron Smith. With his recent injury problems, Tyron is expected to retire sooner rather than later.

Let’s not think about that just yet, though. Let’s talk about how Tyler will fit in 2022. Currently, the guard room consists of Martin, Smith, Connor McGovern, and Matt Farniok. There is a chance that the hometown talent could compete for the starting right tackle spot with Terence Steele, but the team has put a lot of faith in Steele and seem to think very highly of him. I expect Steele to stick at RT barring any signings or draft picks.

It’s likely that Smith competes with McGovern for the starting left guard position, and there’s a high chance the Tulsa Golden Hurricane wins the job. McGovern had a chance to start last season after Connor Williams was benched but underwhelmed when given his shot. Unless McGovern makes big strides this offseason, I expect Smith to come out of training camp with the starting gig.
