Round 6, Pick 193: Derion Kendrick, CB, Georgia Bulldogs

Well, we started with a Georgia defensive player with some off-field concerns, so let’s bookend this with one more. Derion Kendrick is likely to be picked in the sixth round or later, but it’s not because of a lack of ability. Previous arrests during his time at Clemson have sparked major concern for teams, though he has been very upfront with his past struggles.

Kendrick is talented, and he has more experience than just about anybody in big games. However, he does lack speed. The Bulldog ran a 4.75 40-yard dash, which is the slowest for any corner in this draft cycle. That does not take away from his coverage ability, however, and he has shown legit ability in that area.

He has coverage stats that are up there with guys like Derek Stingley Jr. and Sauce Gardner and has previous experience on special teams returning kicks. Kendrick’s speed and off-field concerns may make him undrafted, but if anybody is going to take a shot on him, it might as well be Dallas.

The Cowboys have a serious lack of cornerback depth and have yet to address the position in this mock draft. Getting a guy like Kendrick, even with the concerns, could prove to be very worth it if he develops well and steers clear of off-the-field incidents.
