2. Daxton Hill, Safety – Michigan

I’m pretty sure the Cowboys fan base has been begging this front office to take a starting-caliber safety like Michigan’s Daxton Hill high in the draft for many years. In each draft, the Joneses disappoint and take a developmental safety on day three of the draft instead.

This season, Dallas really needs to hold off on taking a safety early. If they want a talented prospect at safety, they need to wait until day two or three. The main reason is they just re-signed Malik Hooker and Jayron Kearse to contracts. Bringing in a player like Hill after you’ve re-signed two safties you really like isn’t the best football move when that pick could be used in more pressing spots on the roster. Again, this doesn’t mean Hill isn’t an excellent safety. It just isn’t the smarted first-round pick for the Cowboys in 2022.

It would be a waste of Hill’s talent for him to come in and sit on the bench if he’s unable to beat the two players that have already been in the scheme and understand it. Dallas has much bigger needs and should focus their attention on adding bodies up front, and can then take a safety later that can play special teams and learn from Hooker and Kearse. Then, next season, if they need another safety, appease the fans and give them a starting-caliber safety.
