With the 56th pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys select …

John Metchie III, Wide Receiver – Alabama

Height: 6’0″ Weight: 195lbs

Career Stats: 155 receptions, 2,081 receiving yards, 13.4 yards per catch, 14 receiving touchdowns

It’s starting to sound more and more like the Cowboys are really going to cut Amari Cooper loose. If you look back at how they handled the Dez Bryant situation, it’s pretty similar. The good thing for them is that with the money they could save cutting Cooper, they would be able to keep either Michael Gallup or Cedrick Wilson. But they still need more help in the future.

That’s where John Metchie III comes into play. He’s still recovering from an ACL injury, so he may not be ready to contribute his rookie season, but we’ve seen in the past that the Cowboys haven’t shied away from taking a player coming back from a big injury. Jaylon Smith, Sean Lee, Bruce Carter all come to mind.

Metchie III is built in the same mold as Cooper. They both excel in route running and getting a clean release off the line against cornerbacks. Some may think that he doesn’t have the speed needed to be a big-play threat but he’s an elusive receiver who, like Cooper, can make people miss in the open field. Getting Prescott another reliable receiver with CeeDee Lamb and whichever receiver they decide to re-sign will set themselves up for success in the future.

Previous Pick: Arnold Ebiketie, Defensive End – Penn State

NFL Draft Comparison: Julian Edelman
