Now, many of Dallas’ players will likely have their contract restructured, like Elliott, tackle Tyron Smith, and guard Zack Martin, creating some additional cap space. However, it wouldn’t be enough to clear all $21 million. To help the cap situation, Dallas could choose to cut smaller contracts in the process like cornerback Anthony Brown or kicker Greg Zuerlein.

Brown, whose infamous game for the Cowboys this season was getting flagged four times for pass interference on Thanksgiving, has a cap hit of $6.5 million.  With Jourdan Lewis still in the mix at cornerback and Kelvin Joseph surely getting more snaps next season, the Cowboys don’t need Brown anymore. He is set to become a free agent in 2023. The Cowboys could release or trade Brown at any point and save $5 million. Saving that $5 million could help the team re-sign key players.

Also, the Cowboys don’t pay athletes to suck, sorry Greg Zuerlein. The former Los Angeles Rams kicker tied a career-high with 12 missed kicks (extra points and field goals) this season. His $2.8 million cap hit could save the Cowboys $2.5 million if they decide to release him.

All things considered, Dallas has to make some tough decisions this offseason. Some fan favorites will be cut this offseason because, at the end of the day, it’s a business. As weird as it sounds, releasing these players could help the Cowboys get back to the Super Bowl. Cooper is a fantastic player, but isn’t worth $20 million a season, neither is Lawrence.

By making these moves, the team can afford to re-sign tight end Dalton Schultz coming off a career year with 78 catches for 808 yards. Also, they could afford to re-sign Randy Gregory and Jayron Kearse, two players who were integral parts of making that defense much improved from 2021. Gregory, who plays opposite Lawrence, had a better year than him and would come at a much cheaper price.

All in all, the Cowboys have the talent to make it to the Super Bowl next season, but this offseason will either make it or break it for America’s Team. Expect to see some major roster changes in the next couple of months.
